Donald J. Hoffman Details

Donald J. Hoffman is Chairman of Akron Energy Systems, LLC. Don is the Principal of The CREST Company, a management advisory firm he founded in 1989. The CREST Company provides consulting services to companies throughout the United States including their international business interests. From 1985 through 1988, Mr. Hoffman was President of The Hudson Group, Inc., a 15 location wholesale distributor of building materials. Before Hudson, he spent ten years with International Paper Company in a variety of management positions in marketing, finance, and operations, and was most recently the Manager of Lumber and Plywood operations. Mr. Hoffman is a graduate of Biola University and received his MBA from California State Polytechnic University Graduate School of Business and was awarded the CMA designation in Accounting in 1976. Mr. Hoffman is the past Chair of the Wasco, Or County Planning Commission, where he completed 20 years of service in 2013. He is also Chair, Board of Directors, for the Horizon Christian School, Hood River, OR. Mr. Hoffman is a Director of Keweenaw Land Association, Limited (KEWL), Ironwood, MI, and has served as an instructor in International Business at Columbia Gorge Community College in Hood River, OR. He and his wife Susan reside near Mosier, OR.

Robert A. Douglas is the Accounting Controller of Akron Energy Systems, LLC. In this role, He manages a dedicated team providing administrative support services for Akron Energy’s customers and employees. Prior to arriving at Akron Energy Systems, Mr. Douglas successfully held positions of Chief Accountant, Controller / Director of MIS, and Director of International Marketing, with domestic and international manufacturing concerns for over 20 years. He has a track record of providing innovative cost saving solutions to complex problems. He is a graduate of the University of Akron, and was awarded the CPA designation in 1995. Mr. Douglas has served for decades on finance boards of philanthropic institutions, the most recent as elected Financial Secretary for ABT in Akron, Ohio.

Kelly Dodson Details

Kelly Dodson joined the AES team in 2009, and his current responsibilities include serving customers and developing new business and development opportunities within the downtown business district. Dodson was previously Vice President of Business Development and Sales for Akron Thermal, LLC from 1995 to 2009. Before that, he was the Marketing and Business Development Manager at wTe Corporation from 1986 to 1995. He has fostered strong business and government relationships over the duration of his career.

Dodson’s extensive working knowledge of solid waste fuels and wood and tire-derived fuels has contributed to the success of the diverse fuel needs of this facility over the years. He has authored several technical papers on the use of waste fuels for this process and has served on several committees for local governmental agencies. Kelly’s involvement in planning and developing the downtown chilled water system helped to achieve a successful market penetration in offering chilled water to businesses in the downtown Akron market.

John has an extensive industrial maintenance field background with electrical and electronic component disciplines for the power generation industry. He has 16 years as Senior Journeyman certification as high voltage technician, Motorola microwave radio and two-way radio technical background and he holds many certifications ranging from Aviation to Industrial Controls. As a manager, he plays a pivotal role in the planning and ongoing maintenance to both power production facilities.

Trina Stoll Details

Trina is responsible for all aspects of Human Resources including administering payroll, employee benefits and interacting with our staff on a daily basis. Trina is also responsible for customer invoicing. She began her career at this facility 25 years ago, when she joined the Accounting Department. Over the past few years, she has helped develop the Human Resources Department by working closely with the employees and the administration. Trina attended The University of Akron.

Carla DeSantis is currently the Safety Director for two local utility companies – Akron Energy Systems and Cleveland Thermal. Both companies generate and distribute steam and chilled water to downtown locations for use in heating, air conditioning, and electrical power generation. She is responsible for the safety and health of the 100+ workers at four generating plants as well as two teams of distribution street workers. Carla has been working exclusively in the field of occupational safety and health for the past eight years. She possesses a Bachelor’s degree in psychology, a Master of Arts degree in organization development, and a Master of Science in occupational safety and health. Previously, Carla worked as an occupational safety and health consultant with a variety of employers in both the manufacturing and construction industries. She assisted employers in implementing the BWC’s 10 Step Business Plan for Safety and developed effective safety and health processes for each unique organization, including OSHA compliance guidance, safety and health training, and management support. Carla began her career in occupational safety at General Electric Consumer and Industrial Products as a Safety Coordinator. She was active in all aspects of the facility’s environmental, safety and health program and acted as a liaison between plant management and the union membership, developing culture change strategies and overseeing the work of seven independent safety committees. Carla introduced and managed Operation Prevention, a peer counseling program aimed at reducing at-risk behavior and preventing injuries in the workplace.

Steve Durgala Details

Steve is responsible for the day to day operations of AES’s production of steam, chilled water, and hot water from all of our generation facilities. In his 21 years of service to this district heating system, Steve has held all positions in the operations group, from heavy equipment operator to Lead Stationary Engineer before assuming the official role of Operations Supervisor in June of 2016 after having served as interim Operations Supervisor for more than a year. Steve was awarded his CEM Certification (Certified Energy Manager) from the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) in June 2014. Steve is a military veteran, having served in the U.S. Air Force and Ohio Air National Guard for more than 20 years, and retiring in 2010.

Rick has been involved with the City of Akron Energy Distribution System for over 15 years. In his current position as Capital Projects Engineer, he plays a key role as a part of the AES team responsible for planning, engineering, and implementing facility and system capital projects. His primary engineering responsibility from 2010 to 2015 was providing the engineering support for the successful completion of a 5-year capital improvements plan that improved steam/chilled water generation and distribution efficiency, reliability, and sustainability for the City of Akron system.

Rick brings over 30 years of diverse plant and project engineering expertise to the AES management team with focus on increasing system reliability, improving customer services, and reducing operation and maintenance costs. In addition to energy generation and distribution experience, he has held engineering and management positions in the recycled paper industry with Ivex Packaging Corporation and in the wood processing industry with The Longaberger Company. Rick also has municipal utility experience from employment with the City of Columbus refuse and coal fired electric plant and with the City of Hamilton where he developed and directed their Utilities Engineering Department.

Hawkins holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering Technology, an Associate of Science in Civil Engineering Technology, Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certification, and Certified Energy Manager (CEM) accreditation.

Ronnie Turner Details

As Distribution Supervisor, Ronnie Turner is responsible for maintaining the vast network of steam, chilled water and hot water distribution assets of Akron Energy Systems, including all related construction planning, design, scheduling and project implementation. His department also assists with in-plant maintenance projects, as well as responding to all distribution emergency repairs 24/7.

Ronnie and his experienced crew members hold a 6-G welding certification and they are trained to operate heavy equipment.

Paul Burns Details

Paul has 30 years in the Steam/HVAC industry. He is a 1987 graduate of West Side Inst. Of Technology and holds a Building Engineers Certificate and 3rd Class Stationary Steam Engineer’s license. In addition he has an Associate’s Degree in Automation Engineering Technology. Much of his career was spent in boiler operation/steam engine operation/power generation at a steel mill. The past six years has been at Akron Energy Systems in the metering and Instrumentation side of the industry.
